Laundry and Salsa

Posted in 1 on January 31, 2010 by salsalessons2009

Just wanted to update the site with a laundry scene. This scene is special because it’s  actually something I did. Usually when you think about something romantic to do you think of something more adventurous, but simple can be great too.  Just spending time with someone is great. Of course writers of films, books, newspaper articles and so on are always trying to impose their point of view. We are always talking about objectivity but in reality that’s something that doesn’t exist. What we write is either because we believe it or because we have experienced it at some level. Enjoy the scene.

I also want to thank  Lou Wang for letting us shoot at his  laundromat located at 115  Dyckman Street in New York city.

Andy Conga- Score for film

Posted in 1 on December 25, 2009 by salsalessons2009

Andy Conga a local musician from New York City did the score for “Salsa Lessons”. I met him through the lead actor in the film Alfonso Madrid. In the film we have a number of intermissions with footage of musicians that shaped the music known today as Salsa, Andy’s score in the film consist mostly of him playingthe conga.  He was able to go to the studio and record the music while looking at scenes from the film. I have to say that he did a great job! He also appears in the opening credits of the film playing the conga.

Andy and his band are available for fundraisers and other events. Andy has toured all over the world and currently has a site available with his band of musicians. Feel free to check it out! http://www.abrazosmusic.com/pages/about2.html

SAlsa DAncing Scene- Choreography by Angel Garcia

Posted in 1 on December 11, 2009 by salsalessons2009

This update is of a dancing scene from “Salsa Lessons,”  the choreography for the film was done by Angel Clemente Garcia. He worked for a month with the actors to make sure they look credible as dancers. Angel is a well known Tango and salsa dancer from NYC.   Feel free to check out his site:  http://angeltango.com/angel.html

As far as the scene it was shot in  silhouette.  If you see the film you will find  that in the salsa dancing scenes we started with a  night shoot and the scenes after that got brighter and brighter. The italian director Federico Fellini once said that films are light. I agree,  as a director the use light and darkness in a film is very important.   You can’t just leave that to chance.

Local Place- La Negrita’s Lounge- “Salsa Lessons”

Posted in 1 on December 3, 2009 by salsalessons2009

This update includes a clip from a scene we shot in a nearby lounge. The place is called  La Negrita’s Lounge.  I actually had been there a few times and really like the colors and the environment.  At some point I decided to ask the owner La negrita to let me shoot there and she did.  The place is located at 999 Columbus Avenue, 109 street , NY, NY 10025.  One of my objectives for “Salsa Lessons” was  to have beautiful colors in the film so we made sure of that by picking locations like this one.
